[Alabama] Woman investigating dog attack killed by pack of dogs

Police arrested an Alabama dog owner after a pack of dogs attacked and killed a state employee investigating an earlier attack by the same dogs.

Beard’s body was found after deputies responded to calls of a suspicious vehicle on Crumpton Road outside of Red Bay.

When deputies arrived, they witnessed several dogs attacking residents. One person suffered minor injuries.

We have a guy in town, on a corner, who lets his pit-like dogs wander unrestrained on his front lawn. We drive our dog now for walks & spouse carries
I think bear spray is a good idea. We always carry pepper spray

I was attacked by two dogs just last month. One was a shepherd, the other a pitbull. The pitbull was the obvious antagonist, the shepherd following. There was no warning.. I walk for exercise and these two just came out of nowhere, no barking, no warning whatsoever. I tried kicking them away and the pit-bull grabbed my arm and bit deep. When I tried kicking it off I tripped and the pit went for my throat while the shepherd was jumping on my back. I was able to punch the pit a couple times hard in the face and it backed off with the shepherd following, so I was able to get back to my feet and pick up what turned out to be a rotten stick... fortunately the dogs didn’t know the stick was useless and they backed further off.

I called the sheriff and they came and picked up the pit-bull to be quarantined, they didn’t pick up the shepherd because it didn’t succeed in biting me (not for lack of trying). They were supposed to contact me when the pit bull was released but they never did. I warned the animal control people that the dog should be considered very dangerous as it attacked with violence a stranger without warning, but they didn’t seem to think it was a big deal, despite the gaping wound on my arm that required ER care.

I got the strong impression that there were ‘equity’ issues involved due to the race of the owner... it wasn’t stated but there is always race as a subtext in legal situations in California. I felt like I was just another white man inconveniencing a person of color by being attacked by his dogs.

It is illegal to allow your dogs to run free here but the sheriff made it clear he had no intention of citing the owner for this.

if I get charged by a pit bull, I’m pulling out my gun and shooting the pit bull dead. Its as simple as that.

This incident happened just ‘up the road’ (15 minutes) from where we live. VERY disturbing - owner killed by her own dogs - gruesome details. Of course, the dogs had their supporters/defenders despite the autopsy report & defensive wounds showing Bethany was mauled to death in a grisly fashion.

I’ve seen that show- it’s really sad how low people can be towards others sometimes. Som eof those neighbors were like demons from hell the way they acted and plotted revenge, etc.

If I had done that I would probably still be in jail. They were really out to get me in that place. That was one of the reasons I got evicted, I guess: Because I pepper-sprayed someone’s aggressive dog.

Before people tell me that I should carry a gun, let me say that I’d be dead long before I managed to get it out or do any damage with it, so bear spray is a better option!

Bear spray might be the better option, but I don't understand why a gun would be slower to deploy and operate. Are you carrying bear spray in your hand at all times? That would seem tiresome.

Of course, don’t even insinuate that they were Pit Bulls ‘cause the Pitty people will start whining.

I’m completely on board with euthanizing every pit bull of the face of Earth. Mix breeds as well.

Absolutely. People think any dog is friendly and just waiting to be petted.

A dog, even a domesticated dog is still a wild animal with millions of years of instinct hard wired into it and it's behavior is always unpredictable and in the case of a dog you're dealing with one of the most powerful,ruthless and efficient predators on Earth. Any dog at 30+ pounds and an unarmed human, especially a female and you're all but dead. Two or more and you are dead. May God have mercy of the poor young woman. What a tragedy.

I was just reading about this; it’s very sad. I agree with everyone that said some version of “Gee, why didn’t she have a weapon?” Like, at least some bear spray or something.

I’m relatively fortunate that the dog that entered my property and bit me was owned by a person of the same color as myself. Animal agents did their job without politics.
