Do I have to mentally recreate the scenes with the ‘proper characters’? If I do then I might as well be listening to radio dramatizations!
And I wouldn’t be bothered with the race of voice actors in historical pieces...
I also don’t mind creative twists on things. “Hamlet” set in China in the Ming Dynasty? Peter Pan with all females? The Lord of the Rings in the Congo? Sure. Just present it as such. “The Nutcracker” in 1920s Harlem? I can enjoy different takes.
What I don’t like is when they straightfacedly pretend that race was not an issue at the time; that it was normal say for aboriginals to be in the Russian Tsar’s family or whatever. Ludicrous.
