And I wouldn’t be bothered with the race of voice actors in historical pieces...

I also don’t mind creative twists on things. “Hamlet” set in China in the Ming Dynasty? Peter Pan with all females? The Lord of the Rings in the Congo? Sure. Just present it as such. “The Nutcracker” in 1920s Harlem? I can enjoy different takes.

What I don’t like is when they straightfacedly pretend that race was not an issue at the time; that it was normal say for aboriginals to be in the Russian Tsar’s family or whatever. Ludicrous.

I wouldn’t like it if it was called Hamlet and placed in the Ming Dynasty! Hamlet conjures up an image. I generally don’t like modern renditions of an of Shakespeare’s plays. If I’m watching any of Shakespeare’s plays; I want to watch as it as if I’m a groundling or an Elizabethan noble in the audience. I want that feel and I want that look otherwise I will not enjoy it! If they use the plot and call it something else fine; like West Side Story which is basically Romeo and Juliet.
