The boss of CNN’s incoming parent company is taking aim at Brian Stelter.
John Malone, the biggest shareholder of Discovery, harshly criticized Stelter in an informal meeting of the company’s executives, according to a report.
Discovery is completing a merger with WarnerMedia, CNN’s current parent company.
“I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing,” said Malone in a November CNBC interview
The ratings of Stelter’s “Reliable Sources” have been dismal in the aftermath of the Trump era, with the weekend host largely focused on criticizing conservative media and the former president instead of scrutinizing the current administration.
Malone has spoken more openly of his desire to return CNN to a news model in its content — a turnaround from the partisan leftist commentary that the channel became associated with during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Media reporter and former Washington Examiner editor Jon Nicosia broke news of Malone’s words for Stelter on Tuesday.
Malone ripped Stelter as a “cancer,” criticizing his close relationship with disgraced former CNN president Jeff Zucker and accusing his show of being a failure, according to Nicosia.

Talking about the show is one thing.
Cancelling the show is quite another.
Hey! CNN a good start would be Hunter’s laptop.
CNN was a failed enterprise for many, many years prior to DJT walking down the escalator! We all knew it then and were not at all surprised that they continued their blind rush into journalistic oblivion.
It's a huge coincidence that you said that because, years earlier - before I met Malone, I asked his associate Bill Daniels that very question. He sized me up and said, "Don't spend a dime. Just save everything you can. You can invest after you've first learned discipline."
I’m sure like most Americans we just want to hear just the news, not editorial opinion with matching photo ops to support their opinions.
Oh noes! This is both hugh! and series!
“CNN was leftist long before the Trump presidency.”
Absolutely. Long before. I first noticed it during the first Gulf War. From the barracks we watched CNN as they told us, through their “experts”, how there was no possible way the USA was going to win a ground war with Iraq’s more experienced and hardened army.
This would be wonderful if Malone can do it, but I suspect that soon the Leftist mob will descend on him and start forcing his hand the other way.
How many people are left in the industry who know how to do real journalism?
It might be too late.
Actually, the dismal ratings show that his show is a failure, so the accusation is backed up by pretty solid evidence.
One of my fraternity bros played rugby with Mark Chabenisky (Cuban) .
He got in on the early round of broadcast.com, retired at 50, and still lives like a potentate 20 yrs later.
Erin Burnet is the only one I can stomach. She does a pretty fair job.
Erin Burnet is the only one I can stomach. She does a pretty fair job.
But if CNN were to go to all news, all the time wouldn't that just be like HLN?
Wow! Nice! What fraternity are you an alum of?
Actually it’s one of the reasons I enjoyed watching OAN, they actually told you what was going on in the world.
They had many great anchors, reporters and personalities. I hope John Malone can achieve his goal.
Does anyone remember the Tom Brokaw “harumph”? That was a little disapproving exhale after all things conservative.
Vaguely!
Rarely watched his show.
Viewed him as a pompous ass!
The problem is CNN is a hollowed out husk. They’re too toxic. Nobody will trust them ever again.
