Nationalist Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed a "great victory" in Sunday's general election, as partial results gave his Fidesz party the lead.
Addressing a jubilant crowd chanting his name, Orban said: "We have won a great victory -- a victory so great you can perhaps see it from the moon and certainly from Brussels".
Orban's administration has presided over repeated confrontations with the European Union, including over the neutering of the press and judiciary, and measures targeting the LGBTQ community -- also the subject of a vote on Sunday.
The 58-year-old, already the longest-serving head of government in the EU, was challenged by six united opposition parties seeking to roll back the "illiberal" revolution Orban's Fidesz party has pursued during 12 consecutive years in office.
But with more than three-quarters of votes counted, Fidesz was on 54 percent compared to 33 percent for the opposition coalition, according to results from the national election office -- an unassailable lead.

I had to look it up. Seems like a stupid thing to do.
What is spoiling your ballot, and how do you do it?
He’s a great man, and a true hero of Western Civilization!
Well the right people hate him so therefore i’m for him
Authoritarian is another word the Left uses to attack it’s opponents, whose true definition is embodied by the people that the Left supports.
If you gotta be a pest, be a Budapest.
Don’t be surprised if orchestras and pianists start refusing to perform Hungarian music. It won’t make me Lisztless, and a Bartok is always better than a TikTok.
(Full disclosure: my master’s thesis 45 years ago was based on Bartok’s ethnomusicological studies of Hungarian folk music, so I guess that makes me biased.)
Is that like Zew Zealand’s “autbhoritarian leader” Jacinda Ardern?
Moldova might be #3, or Estonia; time will tell.
Looks like he won in a rout. NPR will be so disappointed. They thought for sure that the Francischurch-Neostalinist party (laughingly portrayed as a Left-Right alliance) crashed and burned. In fact, a far-right party looks like the one that grew.
Authoritarian leader? So did he get 99% of the vote?
If you don’t have a write in option, this is a different way of doing things. I believe that in at least a plurality of presidential elections I have written in (I have also opted third party when someone ok was around and I couldn’t stomach the ‘Pub). In Nevada, “none of the above” is always an option, and sometimes wins.
Why do Germans and French socialists never have to explain their business dealings with Russia?
Tucker Carlson interviewed Viktor Orban several months ago. Mr.Orban is proud of his country and wants it to remain a traditional Hungarian nation. He does not want his country to be invaded by illegal immigrants and most of his fellow countrymen agree. I think he is a smart, practical man.
George Soros spent millions to unseat him. Enough said.
Saw a ut video about Moldova and they said it was very inexpensive to visit as a tourist. Thats a twofer - value plus being with like thinking folks.
The Eastern Europeans like Orban are going to be the people who save Europe from committing suicide. I’m glad he won.
Wonderful news
Well deserved
I hope you are right.
I’ll take someone who believes in his people, nation and culture over a globalist or Marxist or liberal POS any day!
Orban protects his borders!
Orban wins 54 percent of the vote against the united opposition with 33 percent of the vote but in the media he is the “controversial far-right extremist.”
And Hungary stays on the short list of places believers in the authentic Catholic faith can consider emigrating to in a pinch, for example, if the practice of the Ine True Faith in their home country continue to swirl more and more tightly around the drain.
So a leader who doesn’t bow to some far off bureaucrats in Brussels and puts the needs and wants of his citizens first is “authoritarian.”
