Co-hosts of The View slammed actor Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars Sunday night, calling his shocking outburst 'immature and childish,' but Whoopi Goldberg broke ranks to defend the actor, saying 'sometimes you behave badly.'
The 53-year-old actor who won an Oscar later that evening marched onto the stage and hit Rock in the face, then returned to his seat and yelled, 'Keep my wife's name out your f---ing mouth!' after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair.
The bizarre outburst led to swift backlash from millions of viewers, including The View co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro who discussed the ordeal on Monday, calling it 'toxic masculinity' and a 'crime of assault.'
But co-host Whoopi stepped in with a different take.
'I think he overreacted…I think he had one of those moments where it was like G.D. it, just stop,' Whoopi said. 'I get it, not everybody acts the way we would like them to act under pressure. And he snapped.'
Meanwhile, on the Today show, host Craig Melvin slammed Smith for aiding 'this long-held perception that men of color can't control their rage and anger.'
'It was really disappointing,' Melvin said. 'If you're rearing a boy, especially in this country, you spend so much time talking to our kids about keeping your hands to yourself and this long health perception that man of color can't control their rage and their anger and to see someone who's been that beloved for decades - it was troubling on so many levels.'

I watched the video. It was an moderate open hand slap. If Smith really meant harm, he could break Rock’s jaw or even eye socket. Smith was just defending his wife and didn’t get the connection to Demi Moore’s buzz cut in GI Jane.

I had a friend with alopecia, too. But the friend was male. He joked about not having to shave his head anymore (which he did even before the onset — liked the bald look and pulled it off well).
Alopecia doesn’t carry the same cultural stigma for men as it does women IMHO. But yeah, it’s not life threatening.
PS It’s actually believed to be an autoimmune disorder that definitely can be exacerbated by stress.
