The Los Angeles Police Department confirms to Variety that Chris Rock has “declined to file a police report” following an altercation with Will Smith at the 94th Academy Awards. Smith took to the stage during the 2022 Oscars and slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.

He was really stunned and probably in some pain, but he handled it well.
Whatever else, this slap pushed Zelensky out of the Oscar story.
If it was staged, I don't think the Academy was involved. The Academy is very prissy. It likes to imagine itself as dignified.
Chris Rock is not going to press charges against Smith, who is very powerful in Hollywood, and Rick is trying to make a comeback. Not going to happen.
“but is there any chance it was a publicity stunt?”
my thought exactly as i clicked on the link
I think you are overthinking this.
Me - and several hundred other FReepers in the other threads on this same topic.
Me - and several million other people who will be chatting about this around the water cooler tomorrow.
I'm retired, and have got the time.
Regards,
So now for future shows the Academy and ABC has to do nothing but let the Hollywood press pre sell that dying spectacle as a possible Smith/Rock rematch starring two other actors.
It should be possible to analyze the audio...
If there are no charges or indictments, assume it’s fake. And ignore.
Like everything else that takes place in Hollywood, DC, in front of cameras for media.
Per the controversy over real vs fake... I’ve only seen the Rumble upload of the event, but as a former live TV Tech Director for part of my career, I found it convenient that there were 2 wide shot stage left and stage right angles of Smith’s approach to the stage, his hit, and walk back. It appears that the TV Tech Director knew it was coming. Had he NOT expected it, it would more likely have resulted in the medium close up of Rock, with Smith entering the shot, and THEN the Tech Director scrambling for an extreme wide shot for cover along with a few “panicked” switch mistakes. The streaker entering David Niven’s shot might be an example of what I’m speculating about.
Conversely, and contradicting my own theory, if I were the TD and knew it was coming, I would have made damn sure that I got coverage of Smith leaving his seat and tracking him up to the stage, then cutting to a medium shot of Rock looking worried or confused, all for better drama.
The whole of Hollywood is a fake. Our politicians have learned the craft from them. Just slough of all the grubs and larvae of those industries.
The farce works cuz enough people are to lazy or bored to figure it out and so profit is generated for the practitioners.
Why is a police report needed? There’s plenty of evidence of what happened. Police don’t need a report to be filed if he had owned a magazine with one too many capacity, so, somehow this slap isn’t a real crime.
Actors, stage...lights, cameras, action.
is that the proper response to a mean joke?
btw will was laughing at the joke
What was the joke??
Chris Rock "no-sold" the slap in order to "keep his heat" and not look like a 'punk'. I am sure that was agreed upon when it was being planned. He kept his hands behind his back the whole time and moved with the direction of the slap without trying to back away or put his hands up to block it. Clearly a stunt, but Smith had to actually make contact for it to look authentic.
The objective was achieved. More people are talking about the oscars after this "incident" than have ever talked about it in the last few decades.
It was absolutely a publicity stunt.
Juicy Smell-it 2.0 Not that I really care.
