I was under the impression that Russia invaded Ukraine to stop them from repeatedly assaulting Donbass since the 2014.

The sanctions were innefective because the EU has already been devalueing Russias currency and cooking the books on money owed all along anyway.

Ukraine was ordered by internationaal court to pay back 30B that was pilfered and Zalenski told Russia "good luck collecting".
