*Broody Hen Alert*

We’re looking at mid-60’s tomorrow, so I’ll be ‘playing outside’ all day. Yay!

Ellendra knows all about broody hens...

I, on the other hand, am making myself stay OUT of Farm & Fleet and Tractor Supply. I fall in LOVE with those little balls of fluff this time of year. Bigly.

Chickens will be mine, once again, in the future. That, and a mini milk cow.

THEN, my life will be complete. ;)

I try to stop in Tractor supply once a year to see the baby ducks. Nothing cuter in the world than a baby duck. If you want a mini milk cow are you looking at Dexter cattle?

My garden is swampy but in the raised bed, I found some turnip plants I had covered with straw and they are doing great.

I think next year, instead of harvesting them all early and watching them shrivel up and dry out, I will try mulching them and harvesting them as needed. It would be interesting to see how those work out.

Growing fruit is something many people don’t seem to consider when thinking of gardening and survival.

Dexter or a Mini Jersey. Having lived on a Dairy Farm as a kid, Beau is dead-set against us having a milk cow.

Really? I took good care of Weber, and I’m here pretty much 24/7, anyway! Not like I have to get up EXTRA early, or rush home from work to milk.

Farm Boys! Grrrr! ;)

Sometimes it works like a charm! On years we’ve gotten a heavy snow BEFORE frigid temps, I’ve had Brussels sprouts, Kale and Spinach ready to rock in the spring.

It’s a nice treat when that happens. :)

Especially apples. If I could only plant one thing, two apple trees would be it. (Unless you have wild crab apples nearby, you’ll need two for pollination.)

Great production, good keeper, lots of ways to use them, and a good bartering item, too!

Also, apple trees are SO pretty when blooming in the Spring!

A blooming Apple Tree, Robins hoppin’ around looking for worms, and Daffs in bloom says ‘Springtime’ to me. :)

An Irish man walks into a pub. The bartender asks him, “what’ll you have?”

The man says, “Give me three pints of Guinness please.”

So the bartender brings him three pints and the man proceeds to alternately sip one, then the other, then the third until they’re gone.

He then orders three more.

The bartender says, “Sir, I know you like them cold. You don’t have to order three at a time. I can keep an eye on it and when you get low I’ll bring you a fresh cold one.”

The man says, “You don’t understand. I have two brothers, one in Australia and one in the States. We made a vow to each other that every Saturday night we’d still drink together. So right now, my brothers have three Guinness Stouts too, and we’re drinking together.

The bartender thought that was a wonderful tradition.

Every week the man came in and ordered three beers. Then one week he came in and ordered only two. He drank them and then ordered two more.

The bartender said to him, “I know what your tradition is, and I’d just like to say that I’m sorry that one of your brothers died.”

The man said, “Oh, me brothers are fine – I just quit drinking!”

How do you manage with Brussel sprouts. The plants are so tall.

I’m going to be putting my potatoes in next week.

I’ve got raspberries coming. I found a package deal that gives six bushes, 2 early, 2 mid, and 2 late bearing varieties.

They fell over under the weight of the snow.

Otherwise, I’ve never staked them or anything. They’re pretty sturdy! I plant them at the back so they don’t shade anything. I only grow them every few years. Beau doesn’t like them, only me. :)

This year I’m adding ‘Patriot’ Blueberries and I have one rose to replace, but haven’t decided on which variety, yet.

No other big plans - though I will add another cherry and peach if I find them.

I’ve got 16 beds to manage now, PLUS ‘The Big Garden’ and all the small fruits and fruit trees. I told Beau that no matter how much I BEG, or what new hare-brained thing I come up with, he is to NOT give in to any of my demands, LOL!
