Thanks for getting me motivated...the only thing I’ll add to all the advice is People are Different...some can eat certain foods without a problem...while others cannot. We each have to figure that out.

How do you get past the pain? My gets to hurting so bad I wish a were taking opioids. I refuse to do so, so the strongest thing I can get is Tylenol.

“Low carb” will automatically incorporate little to no sugar, processed foods, fast food and junk food since all are high in carbs, except for salads with no high carb toppings at fast food places.

Walking is way more effective than a lot of people think. And it has other benefits, like it’s very soothing for the soul. :) When the business I worked for, where I was on my feet 6 hours a day, closed it’s doors a year ago - I began gaining weight, ugh. So, as soon as it warms up - I’m back to walking again! A few years ago I wanted to improve my breathing and stamina, and so I began by walking 1.5 miles a day, I worked myself up to 4 miles a day in about 6 weeks. Really helped my figure, lol, everything went back where it belonged. I didn’t even feel like I was exercising.

Unless you have a bad back and you canā€™t walk very far then what?

I completely eliminated my lower back pain and sciatica after reading "Fixing You: Back Pain" by Rick Olderman. I certainly can't say it would help everybody, but it worked for me.

It is a complete lifestyle change until you meet our maker. Don’t think of it as a single event to “lose a few pounds” because you’ll just gain them right back. Hardest for me is bread and pasta since I love fresh bread and pasta. You just have to sacrifice. Good luck.

We discovered that as we age, we really do eat less.

Split a steak.

Split a potato.

Make large salads. Eat them first. Summer is full of salads and tomatoes &/or sweet corn as a main (or only) course. Burgers do not necessitate fries.

Stop eating after dinner (late for us, usually) and no breakfast until 10-11 the next day. For me, that is always a glass of kefir or some whole milk Greek yogurt (w/a bit of preserves added).

I designate some days as *graze* and skip lunch and dinner. Other days, we have a late lunch about 4 and skip dinner. Other days, we only do liquids. If we eat a high-carb meal, like spaghetti, we only add a salad, never garlic bread. And once we’re finished eating, we find that 20 minutes later we feel really full, so we never have dessert. Instead, we save it for a light day and eat 1/4-sized portions of a sweet carb as a meal in itself.

I stopped baking. If I make biscuits, we eat 1-2 each & I freeze them for another day. Going to try freezing the unbaked rounds separately on a cookie sheet so I can just take out 3-4 at a time. I do love gravy, but I end up freezing several portions of each batch for later.

Food stretching as an art form will also reduce individual intake. Dibs and dabs go into an omelette topped with one of a variety of oriental/other sauces and that is a main meal.

Often, you aren’t *hungry*, but just want something in your mouth to taste. Japanese call this *lonely mouth*. I will add some star anise (antiviral) to my coffee, squeeze 1/2 lime into some sparkling water (and eat the pulp that is left) Sometimes we will split a purchased portion of cake into 4 parts and each have 1/4. Save the rest for another day.

At 71 & 79, we also do not have anyone who will take care of us if needed. We also will never go to a *home*. God will take us when He’s ready and on His terms. Meanwhile, do what you can to stay active and engaged. We feed/watch birds, garden, do art projects/home maintenance projects, visit friends as we can. I also go on cooking binges and then freeze the extras, which cuts down on daily temptations.

The best weight loss is over time. I do not follow anything religiously. If I want pizza, we have pizza, but nothing else (maybe a salad)and we always have enough left over for a lunch. If we get a bucket of fried chicken, it is 2-3 meals.

Expanding our garden this year and do not want to take up freezer space with a lot of veggies (that space is for meat bought in whole muscle cuts and portioned at home & frozen batches of soup, etc), so my plan is to dehydrate and make powders. Good way to save space and have nutritious add-ins for soups/stews, rice dishes, etc. I no longer have the strength to handle a canner. I make/freeze Green Soup when I have an abundance of lettuce/greens, but I think I can reconstitute powdered, dehydrated greens and save space.

I have never acquired a taste for black coffee, at least, not yet. I always want some cream and a bit of sugar. I know, I know, but a girlā€™s gotta live a little. ;-)

My suggestions.

Lent starts in a couple of days. The best way to loose and keep weight off is to make mindful changes in lifestyle and change habits. Starting each meal with a prayer, reminder to eat less and giving thanks for the food; may make eating more thoughtful and focused.

Since you say you love walking, look up a ā€œcouch to 5 Kā€ walking program and then sign yourself up for two or three 5K events; 30 days, 60 days, 90 days. This will help with your exercise goals.

If you want more, get two sets of dumbbells [ 2x (4 to 6#) and 2x(8 to 12#)] if you are stronger they can be heavier. Go to a sporting good store and find a weight you can easily lift with your weak arm about 20 times twice as your lightest weight.

Good luck.

Are you saying that walking hurts your back? Or something else?

Walking is good for the heart. Start off slow, then work your way up to what you feel is comfortable. Don’t smoke, drink in moderation, cut back on red meat, chicken and fish are always good.

Avoid transfats, drink a few glasses of water a day and get at least eight hours of sleep.

True, but if one eats lots of vegetables, one is full on fewer calories. I was just going high level.
One could also take high doses of Clenbuterol and shed pounds...

Then there’s the model diet.
Tab, cocaine, and Marlboro Lights.

“...Unless you have a bad back and you canā€™t walk very far then what? I loved to walk and did so every day then hurt my back. Canā€™t walk or stand for long.....”

Buy a gym membership or a good recumbent stationary bike.

If old enough Silver Sneakers gym memberships are free to you.
