I never knew it was called Association Football until I fell in this rabbit hole today.

Excerpt

Association football, more commonly known as simply football or soccer,[a] is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of 11 players.

Etymology
Excerpts

soccer (n.)
1889, socca, later socker (1891), soccer (1895), originally university slang (with jocular formation -er (3)), from a shortened form of Assoc., abbreviation of association in Football Association (as opposed to Rugby football); compare rugger. An unusual method of formation, but those who did it perhaps shied away from making a name out of the first three letters of Assoc. Compare 1890s English schoolboy slang leccer, from lecture (n.).

association (n.)
1530s, “action of coming together for a common purpose,” from Medieval Latin associationem (nominative associatio), noun of action from past-participle stem of associare “join with,” from assimilated form of ad “to” (see ad-) + sociare “unite with,” from socius “companion, ally” (from PIE *sokw-yo-, suffixed form of root *sekw- (1) “to follow”). Meaning “an organized body of persons with a common purpose” is from 1650s. Meaning “mental connection” is from 1680s; that of “quality or thing called to mind by something else”

The Soccer ball symbolism is meaningful to me.

association (n.) “action of coming together for a common purpose,”
associare “join with,”
sociare “unite with,”
socius “companion, ally”
(from PIE *sokw-yo-, suffixed form of root *sekw- (1) “to follow”).
Meaning “an organized body of persons with a common purpose” is from 1650s.

I’m a bit of a slow learner, only took me almost four years to catch this one. Obviously the deep state cabal would have known what the symbolism meant. Makes sense why he became whipping boy early on.

Finding out that ‘soccer’ derives from ‘association’ as in “Association Football” is probably the neatest thing I’ll learn all year.

I watch enough British tv to hear ‘football’ referred to as ‘footie’ but I don’t think I would ever have constructed ‘soccer’ out of ‘Association Football.’ Makes total sense.

Thank you!

I’ve flipped through some ancient college yearbooks and soccer team photos are there along with football and all the other “American” sports.
