You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

A familiar author, a little long, but especially topical.

If you need a clue ask the group to send you a letter to your private reply.

What this author so wisely said has sadly come true today and it will be the destruction of our nation if we can’t stop it.

I know it’s a little long, but it’s Sunday, and this one is especially topical.

It was spot on. What I didn’t mention is that the author’s first name is an easily-recognized pattern.

As much as I love using Hal’s Helper, I may now be forced to do the CGs on paper. My iPad updated the iOS last night and Hal looks totally different and awful. It still has that aqua background, but now the little spaces where you type in the letters are now tiny bright pink ovals with a symbol in it that represents “up and down, scroll” that is almost the same color as the typed letters, and that color does not have enough contrast to the oval’s pink, so that it’s difficult to read the words.

I don’t know if the new IOS version is rendering his code differently or if maybe Hal changed it himself. ?????

HAL probably violates some magic IOS protocol or rule that didn’t make any difference before but gives the results you are seeing now. HAL will probably straighten it out in a few days. You are HAL’s beta site. There are probably other sites that do what HAL does, though I must admit I have become a fan of HAL on chrome/PC. I used to use a DIY Excel spreadsheet that I was accustomed to (and “coded” myself) but HAL has advantages, though I found it easier to see patterns in the Excel format.

The same thing happened to me in December. No one else here seemed to have the problem. Not sure if it’s exclusive to IPad.

I emailed Hal and he changed the code so that the selected letters appeared much bolder, and it helps. Otherwise I had the same exact issue you now have. It was frustrating and no longer fun. Yes, awful.

I would have expected that the code change applied to all who access HCH, but obviously not.

As a nation, we cannot say we were not warned.

Sadly, we took no heed.

No change to HAL on my Amazon Fire tablet.
Got notification of some sort of update overnight on both my Samsung S10+ and my tablet but have no idea what it was or its effect.

Nearly as fast as I could type. I started with the most common letter and found the most common word. That got me the first word, and then the rest of the puzzle opened up.
