There is a large number of “caucasian” citizens with American Indian ancestry.

They are one-eighth Cherokee.
Their other ancestry includes Irish, Mexican, Jewish, German, Scottish, and Swiss.
Well, as long as they are working with bought and paid for private land they can pretty much do what they like. Of course the down side is that by doing this they have probably removed it from the Tax Base for the effected counties and township and put it into non taxable Tribal lands. (No expert here so not sure how that works.)
