Tracks with my perception. Sadly. I can’t tell you how many times (PRE-TRUMP), I knew more than my doctor, simply because either
1. I OBSERVED
and / or
2. I read the literature. (and I’m not talking about internet blogs)
Before, we had out own practice,got paid by cash, and usually were men using logic to find out what was wrong. Often you knew the whole family and often you left stuff out of your records like the husband saw hookers or was gay, or the wife tippled a bit or had a friend on the side.
Now docs are often women who are feminists and who tend to follow rules.they are employees of HMOs who get paid only if the document everything, and follow the rules, but not if they spend time talking trivia with the patient.
The rules are decided by experts who analyze a bunch of articles and decide how you should practice ...but a lot of these opinions are garbage in, garbage out, as you see in Ivermectin, which included patients who were terminal, not patients who were given it early, even though we know other anti virals need to be given early to stop the disease.
