When I read stories such as this one, I’m forced to wonder how they discovered the traitor and the mechanics of finding the evidence. It looks like Dong Jingwei was cooperating with America long before he defected, was providing these names, then US officials swooped in to “catch” him as he was making his getaway.
Customs officials found the program on his devices as he was leaving the country for good. There’s very little chance that your typical Customs official would stumble upon and recognize such information on a phone, laptop or tablet without being pointed in that direction. Are they even allowed to open these devices without a warrant? And aren’t you only subject to Customs inspections by the receiving country? When I leave Canada and attempt to enter the US by any means of transport, I’m interrogated by US officials, not Canadian officials. I’m happy that the traitors are being caught. I’m just curious about the process and believe there’s more to it than meets the eye.
