I am not aware that such a 'term' (as Chief Justice) has ever been specified. It is worthy of a good test... and it might remind the justices that they are not 'supreme', that they also answer to the separation of powers.

My idea, as stated earlier, is for POTUS to nominate a replacement and see what falls out. I do not think that it has ever been tested.
As I remember it, W appointed Roberts as Chief Justice mainly because of his age. W thought he would be the CJ for a long time because he was so young, thereby having conservative leadership for many decades to come. HA!!!!
