How do you measure the cold on Mount Washington? 30º below zero, or cold enough to freeze spaghetti in mid-air

Temperatures across New England dipped below zero Tuesday, but on Mount Washington in New Hampshire, a different, more anecdotal metric described the treacherous weather: the air was cold enough to freeze a dish of spaghetti, fork included, in mid-air.

Like a futuristic sculpture memorializing morning-after leftovers, the plate of pasta stood suspended in its place, its fork defying gravity as it hovered several inches off the snowy ground.

That’s 62 degrees below freezing. I never cared where the came up with the zero. 32 degrees is freezing anything below that is fracking cold.

That’s because you didn’t exchange the summer air for winter air in the tires... happens all the time 😆

I finally got winter air in my tires. It seems like I only need to add winter air when it’s below zero. Most the time, air at the gas stations doesn’t work, because it’s too cold.
If I find a FREE air pump working, I freeze my fingertips putting air in the tire.

Finally this year I got smart. I had the dealer add winter air.

I went ice fishing at 30 below with winds around 30 mph, and also worked outside on a roof that week too. can’t imagine the wind chill at 65 mph and 30 below

It’s a simple plywood box basically, with seats, holes in the floor, maybe a table- and a window or 2 to watch the tip-ups- a shanty basically. Nothing fancy. We do,have ice houses too which are longer, and can fit several folks, and has bunks for overnight fishing, and a few more luxuries, but most folks just build cheap ice shanties (though these days, the price of lumbar, they ain’t so cheap anymore

Where is here?
In MN we call them ice houses. Any any meal baked with hamburger, cream of mushroom soup and a carb is called
a hotdish.

You bake a hotdish in a casserole.

Was, can’t tak the cold anymore. I used to love the cold too- used to love hi,ing back into ponds and setting up a fire on the shore, and fishing all day, eating fresh fish onmthe campfire- being out in nature. now not so much because of the cold. My internal thermal regulator got broken somewhere along the line (now I can be freezing cold,in summer for no reason)

Yep, I used to catch and sell yellow perch to a store that sold it to resteraunts. Didn’t make a lot of money, but would get enough for gas, a little, pocket change, and had enough fish to have dinner for myself also.

Think of the shanty towns during the depression. Folks lived in one room shacks with no frills- that’s basically an ice shanty too. They look like “shanty towns” when you have a bunch out on the lake together

I’ve been on Mt. Washington before, when it was minus 35 and 100mph winds, back in the 80’s when I was young and foolish.

It kind of set a new definition for COLD!

Pretty sure that Mt. Washington is on the Appalachian Trail and hikers are warned that you can die in July due to possibility of severe weather changes. It’s pretty dangerous year ‘round.
