Tech PING! Thinking I need a camera security system. Has anyone looked at them? Thoughts? I want a stand alone camera system with night vision and recording capacity. Something that would work with my wifi? Something that works in the dark? (we live in the woods)

Is there such a duck?

DO NOT get a subscription based system. They are horrible. Even after a year of moving they still kept charging me. And to cancel you had to call a “customer retention specialist” that just went to hold and would hang up on you mid sentence. I would guess Simply Safe is just fine.

I bought a Hiseeu 8 camera kit off of amazon a couple years ago.

Whatever you buy, make sure it isn’t one of those. It is utter trash.

Two failed cameras in the first 90 days. The UI is less user-friendly than the Linux VI text editor, which is to say “good luck getting the $&^%@ thing to interface with your phone or computer or anything else that might make it slightly useful”.

The only good thing that I can say about it is the cameras provide lovely images (until they don’t).

There is. It’s too complicated for you to install or run, though.

If you get a camera security system, make sure it is wired and has 4k resolution. Anything less than 4K won’t pick up license plates. Wireless cameras blur when motion occurs.

We have some Blink Cameras as. They go on sale several times a year. They do not need a cable to them and the batteries last a long time.

I have a Blink camera covering my front door, and I find it more than adequate for my needs. The Energizer Lithium AA batteries lasted just around a year and a half before I had to replace them.

But the drawback to the Blink, which isn't a drawback to me but may be to others, is that it doesn't record 24/7 so you can go back and review the footage if you want to find out if something happened.

The Blink must be triggered by motion, and only records in 30 or 60 second increments. And the sensitivity of the trigger must be balanced between getting good video of someone on your porch, and not triggering every time a leaf gets blown on the lawn.

The OP I think wanted the kind of security camera system where he can see multiple cameras simultaneously, which ain't the Blink system.

In laws live between Pueblo CO and Colorado Springs, off the beaten path. With the legalization of drugs in CO they are seeing lots of traffic - which is not the norm.

They bought a starlight camera - huge sensor and slow shutter speed, can capture a license plate in the dark. Will get good pics with the light reflected off the clouds from the town and the freeway 15 miles away.

They even added a regular camera (for thieves to steal) on their main gate, and the starlight cam captures all.

Highly recommended.

Our household uses Blink. One time charge and no monthly script rate. When we leave the house, we arm the system. We have 3 cameras outside and 3 inside the house.

Much better than the days of ADT......

I have collected security camera or years. I do not want to tell you how many X10 cameras and accessories that we spent hundreds of dollars on. But it was a bit of an obsession for a while. We had them hooked to VCRs from the Goodwill with motion controllers. We had a problem with contractors stealing our stuff. We caught them on tape, so they did actually pay for themselves.

I did not mention the Blink in my first post because of the limitation you mentioned, although the local storage issue has been partially solved with the “Blink Add-On Sync Module 2”. I only mentioned it because it basically eliminates basically all wiring requirements. But I believe you still need a paid subscription if you didn’t start an account years ago.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084RQ6MHJ

“Supports local video storage for up to 10 Outdoor, Indoor, Video Doorbell and Mini devices. Record and store motion clips when you insert a USB flash drive (up to 256 GB – sold separately) into the Blink Sync Module 2.”

But it still does not support live view recording just clips.

Sorry for the typos and I should have said also that you were correct in your explanation. But I have to say that trying to review hours of video that was not captured with motion detection can be extremely tedious.

One time someone broke into our car which was in view of the ring on our front door, but we had a better view from a couple of our Wyze Cams. Even though I knew the exact time that the incident happened from the Ring camera it was still a pain to find the video on the Wyze Cams. And of course, when I gave the police the video that I edited from 3 different cameras... they had basically zero interest anyway.

I am pretty happy with Ubiquti and the Dream Machine Pro.

1. The DMP is a gateway that can run a lot of advanced network functions such as VPN, deep packet inspection, smart wifi management, network isolation, etc. The access points support mesh. It is a little pricier than your typical router but then you get a video surveillance system and VoIP telephone and security Entry solution.

2. It has a nice video surveillance system — Protect. Most of the camera offerings are wired PoE but they do make one model camera that is wireless and the “doorbell” is also wireless. Best of all all recordings are stored on a local hard drive. And the software manages storage space FIFO base on available disk space.

BTW, the software and software support comes with the hardware.

You'll probably spend around $1200 for a complete setup. But the nest based solutions will approach that as you add more cloud storage and cameras. Plus you get all of the extras, network management, access, talk and protect for the same price.

Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

I use Ring for the doorways. Useful for deliveries when I’m at work. Porch pirate problems went away.

Also for answering “what the h-— time did I get home from the bar last night”.
