Alec was raised with guns. His father was a Marine and taught riflery for years. I'm betting his dad had an impressive gun collection and even took Alec to the range.

And you know his dad taught him gun safety.

Another interesting tidbit is that Alec, early on, had picked out the gun that would kill her. Another fact...RUST is about a man who accidently kills someone. (That would send Columbo into a frenzy.)
