For the first time ever, astronomers have imaged in real time the dramatic end to a red supergiant’s life
In real time?
For us to have observed the end of the supergiant, we would have needed to be in the vicinity of the explosion. As it is, our observation would have been much later than the actual event.
So, how far was/is that supernova?

So this happened 120 million years ago, or when Joe Biden first ran for Congress.

The creatures that lived on the planets close to that should have paid more carbon taxes. That would have stopped their sun from exploding.

Old history. From what I’ve read elsewhere, it exploded 120 million years ago. The light is just now reaching the earth.

Felt somewhat embarrassed each time...
IAC, it is the typical mountains of collective data from lots of sources typical in both astrophysics and particle physics that leads to author lists as long as this one...
Excellent paper...

Looks to me like the whole article is a crock. Nobody “captured” anything. All they have is phony-looking artist’s rendering of what he thought a supernova might look like as he toked on his roach. Is THAT the best science can do these days?

“...astronomers have imaged in real time the dramatic end to a red supergiant’s life — watching the massive star’s rapid self-destruction and final death throes before collapsing into a type II supernova.”
It’s frustrating that the image and “video” in the story are both “artist renderings”.
Why not release an image of what they claim they have imaged?
