Believe it or not, when he retired he was an Electrical Engineer and he programmed computerized mechanical equipment. He had an IQ that was Trump size. Not too long after retiring he had a terrible accident on I-75 that did a lot of head injury. He had closed head frontal lobe trauma. He was in the trauma unit at our major hospital for two weeks and spent 3-4 months in rehab learning to walk, feed himself, etc. It took forever! He has had short term memory loss since. Some days he’s good; somedays he’s bad. There are days he doesn’t remember if he ate, if he got the mail, or anything. The next day he will be fine. It’s a memory rollercoaster. There are days that I can walk down, get the mail, hand it to him, and in 15 minutes he’s in there saying he’ll go down and get the mail.

Either way, at 83, even without the head trauma from 20 years ago, his memory could be getting bad. The short term memory issue keeps him from retaining much. I’m afraid to even go pick up groceries on the bad days. I’ll be 10 minutes down the road and he calls to find out where I went. He’s one reason I retired at 58.
