Some of the older Chinese paintings show the narrowed, slant style.

During the Qing Dynasty, very small eyes were considered most attractive. Today, all of the Chinese girls are going for double eyelid surgery and the biggest eyes possible - so their complaints in this case are not off the mark. The model looks like a Suzy Wong type from the 70's.

This campaign against companies (Chinese and foreign) for supposedly insulting in their advertising Chinese women for the way their eyes look, which supposedly confirms to Fu Manchu-type stereotypical imagery, has been going on for a couple of months now.

It is absolutely true that through WWII this imagery was commonly used at least in the US to mock East Asians in a disgraceful way. But now evoking this is just claptrap for the new breed of Chinese nationalists.
