heave
A vessel's transient, vertical, up-and-down motion.
surge
A vessel's transient motion in a fore and aft direction.
sway
A vessel's lateral motion from side to side.
These are distinct from roll, pitch, and yaw which are rotational movement about an axis rather than along an axis.
