The California Air Resources Board (CARB) passed a regulation aimed at “Small Off-Road Engines” on Thursday that will ban the sale of portable generators in the state — which includes generators mounted in recreational vehicles.
The ruling bans the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers and lawnmowers in the state beginning in 2024. Portable generators will be required to meet more stringent standards in 2024 and meet zero-emission standards starting in 2028.
In the 2024 model year, portable generators will have to improve their efficiency by somewhere between 40% and 90%, which seems unrealistic in such a short period of time, so the reality is, it will be very hard to find a generator in Calfornia in two years.

Consider that jet airplanes have auxiliary power units that run on the same fuel as the main engines; and they are turbines and not piston configurations. So I could see trailer-configuration generators (for towing behind a truck or car) with turbine-driven generators running on diesel fuel.
Just the thing for recharging your Tesla. And the power output can be so high that the charging takes only ten times longer than filling a gas tank.
This is California trying to impose their idiocracy on the rest of the country. They figure manufacturerers will abandon everything but electric because it will theoretically be cost prohibitive to manufacture two product lines.
And when California’s grid goes down in whole or in part?
Just like ethanol, the idea that electric is somehow more environmentally friendly is staggeringly absurd.
What a hellhole. And of course there’s ZERO consideration about ramping up electrical generation and transmission. How the heck do they expect to power their zero emissions future? Pixie dust?
Oh, they are. The RE market here in Idaho is proof.
I went to SF every year for a conference from about 1980 to 1994 and loved it. Went back in 2019 and was appalled at what I saw. Human excrement on the sidewalks one block from Fisherman’s wharf, used needles in the gutters, people passed out in doorways...filth everywhere.
I’m done with SF.
I foresee a lot of innovation in 3rd party muffler advances.
I think you have the big picture. That is exactly what they are doing, like leading with a right.
I assume they will turn their agriculture inspection stations in to small engine stops. BUT not to worry. Just have every illegal alien carry one on their backs as they walk in to the state.
Look at the good side — no more combusting of those nasty fossil fuels /s
May darkness swallow you up forever.
Will Donald Trump please campaign in California this time? Rally the God-fearing Latinos, for the love of God!
“All those that are living off the grid will now have no backup power.”
Isn’t that the point?
THAT is one stupid dumb @$$ed state!!! Just when you think they have done some really stupid crap, they go and beat that with something else even more radically stupid!!!
No more chain saws? The lumber industry will love that! They will have to bring in a whole lot of Norwegian lumber men with their manual cross-cut saws to cut all the timber.
Run the generators on wind power and solar panels until China sets off a nuclear device in your stratosphere and shuts it all down. At least you have been a responsible citizen by promoting good energy management and minimizing climate change you apex fools.
They forgot to include gasoline powered chain saws. Banning them will help close down any timber industry that is still left in the state.
I am going to sell my brother-in-law a heard of goats so that he can keep all the lawns in his neighborhood freshly trimmed.
The smoke from wildfires is forcing CA winegrowers to produce smoky vodka, I heard on TV.
>>They will have to bring in a whole lot of Norwegian lumber men with their manual cross-cut saws to cut all the timber.
They’d all have to wear high heels, suspenders, and a bra to fulfill the diversity quotas.
Shouldn’t be — They are made of parrafin, another nasty fossil based fuel product.
So, during power failures, you just die?
