You’re saying public schools were acceptable in your day because they taught all the “right” things.
I’m saying public schools have no place in a free nation under any circumstances. Once you accept the idea that the government can: (1) compel you to attend school, and (2) force you to bear the cost of OTHERS to attend school … then you’ve already lost the war. You just didn’t know it yet.
If I told you that I’m willing to eliminate the Second Amendment because the police in my town are nice people and don’t abuse their authority, you’d call me a damn fool — and for good reason.

Back then in the late-40s and 50s-on, America didn’t have the ability to educate all the post-war Boomer children, in one-room schools, where learning was marginal, at best.
My Dear, Departed Dad and Mom were both educated in the 20s & 30s in one-room schoolhouses, and they both said it was chaotic, at times, with 3-4 grades being taught.
Dad went on to become a Chemical Engineer after Army Service in the Battle of The Bulge in WWII, and Mom was an RN during WWII. They turned out just fine, despite the educational conditions in those early years.
