That is bad territory. All kinds of bad types hide out there.

Growing up, spent my summers at the shore. Driven through them a bunch, even now it’s spooky at night...

I just brought up a clip of that famous exchange, on YouTube.

Something strikes me that never did before:

Chris, shooting blindly, kills a buck. But later in the episode, Paulie and Chris are starving to death in the car they found.

A smarter man might have cut a few strips of deer meat off that buck. Would have been handy later.

I feel so terrible for the family; I’ve been following the story since I heard about it, as I was in Manahawkin for Thanksgiving - their daughter had posted something on a shore Facebook page that I like to follow. Warren Grove is def out in the sticks....and Route 539 can be desolate. I wonder if after their quad got stuck, maybe they decided to walk out to check deer traps (?? but that begs the question why he wouldn’t take his gun, so it doesn’t make sense). It sounds like they must have crossed paths with a psychopath. There are homeless camps around the Toms River area. I’ve not heard of anything like that around Rte 539, but they could be out there deep in the woods.

Ha!
The fact that Chelsea Hubbell-Mezvinsky is running marathons instead of for political office tells me the Clinton “brand” is polling quite poorly these days.

Taught 7th grade. Tis true almost all the boys and some of the girls were absent first and last day of hunting season. We finally got smart and put one of those days as a teacher workshop.

Yeah man.....I grew up in South Jersey.I lived in Tuckerton right off 539 (Green Street) in the mid 1980s. We used to shop at the little K-Mart in Manahawkin. I have been out on those sand roads many, many times.Just me and my 4WD Subaru Brat. Also had 5 x 5 square miles topo maps. Never felt threatened. The area where the couple disappeared is more traveled than usual. The NJ Parkway has a exit ramp there. I used to see lots of dumping going on along the sand road. Mostly construction materials. There is some poaching too. There is also a bombing range in Warren Grove. We used to watch the A-10s and F4s practice. There is something missing in this story if you ask me.

If they did not have 4 wheel drive and tried to drive on the woods roads probably have a broken axial.

Thank you. Was fun to write because I re-lived the experience that way. It was a very interesting one after reading all about the Jersey Devil. Instead of the Jersey Devil I found myself thinking about the New York Devil!

I have definitely heard of the pig woman. I got very involved in reading of the Trial of the century because my in-laws own a house in Lavallette, NJ. As we all walked to the ocean first time we went there to visit there is a house on the end of the street, from the early 1900s. It looks rather ominous and I asked my mother-in-law about it, thinking it was haunted (I don't think it is). She told me the man who once lived there was a suspect in a famous murder. I asked her how she heard of that and she said there is a book about it she read, which I got and read. You would be very interested in that book. It's called Fatal Tryst by Gerald Tomlinson. There is another book on it called The minister and the choir singer by William Kunstler but it's not as well written, too fact oriented, nor as interesting as Fatal Tryst. So I discovered Henry Stevens, Mrs. Hall's brother and the one whom they believed shot the lovers under the crabapple tree, was the owner of the house. I paint and that fascinated me so much I painted a painting of the house. Showing you my painting here so you can see the house, which is huge, btw. My husband and I went to Rutgers, which now is where Mrs. Hall lived with her murdered and untrue husband, Edward Wheeler Hall. The Hall house is now the woman's Dean living abode on campus at 23 Nichol Avenue in New Brunswick on the Rutgers campus: https://rutgersrarities.com/2021/02/15/sinister-minister-reverend-hall-house/ and so it is perfectly preserved for anyone who wants to see it. It's a pretty nice place and you can easily see it from the sidewalk. Evidently Mills lived just around the corner but that is gone now. I felt sorry for Mrs. Hall. It seems her husband used her for his own personal gain, I think. I also felt sorry for Charlotte Mills, daughter of Eleanor Mills. She lost her mom and was left behind to think of it the rest of her life. I wonder if she knew about the affair as it was ongoing?

An grizzled old man found out Kevorkian was no longer alive and decide to take a trip with his wife along the lines of Gabby Petito's ignominious journey.   He wasn't anywhere close to Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest but he was close to the Pine Barrens, it was almost in their backyard.

I meant to say the Stevens house is only an hour drive to the site of the murder and back in those days with less traffic I would think less time, so her brother could’ve driven there, shot them, then drove back (my figuring, could be wrong...) but I’ve always thought it was Willie who did it. He lived with his mother and would not be so hard for him to go there, and get back walking. Mom had the car. I forget the complete details of the case but I think that is where I ended up thinking.

My husband is at work but I will tell him of the post. We also together went to the site of the Hookerman. He went there years before with his gf then and had a story that happened to him there.

I live on the out skirts of The Pine Barrens. Used to go ‘’camping’’(couple of cases of beer and, uh.. other stuff) with my buddies a long, long time ago.

It’s a miracle we didn’t get lost. It’s very easy to do in the Pines. The soil is largely soft and sandy and even a four wheel drive vehicle can get stuck. As far as animals?

Nothing that would endanger any human, trust me.

These poor folks got lost in what is essentially a trackless waste.

Pineys aren’t known for being friendly to outsiders.

Most folks around here stay out of the Pines.
