Getting spit off for whatever reason just goes with the program.
I still commute on the street with over 90k on my 2002 BMW R1150RT. Not too many years left for me in this sport - gotta hang up my helmet before I get too old.
Oh, and this - “when in doubt, ring it out.” Happy Thanksgiving!
Yeah, you’re correct. Brain fart on my part.
What fool would even expect a race style bike to be comfortable on a long haul?
For a few thousand bucks you can turn an 883 into a 90+hp fire breathing monster. The writer is a moron.
Probably more off.
Any BMW boxer. Their dry clutch is idiot - slides on a splined mainshaft that is near impossible to lube, you literally have to separate the tranny from the engine case an inch after unbolting the rear shocks and a couple other items including the clutch cable, dab on just the right amount of red sticky grease, too much or wrong kind and grease slings onto the clutch, not enough and the splines turn to lunch meat and you got a new $700 mainshaft to install. When the electrics begin to go on the older models, start thinking landfill.
Agree. And even if you leave it as it is, if you can’t really enjoy a sporty, you are probably the problem. The whole “fat” thing is overdone at HD. The slim maneuverability of the sporty and the comfortable position is a blast. Just don’t try to make it be a Gold Wing or a Ninja 750.
Yes, that is right hahaha
If you want a sportster, you’re better off with the 1200. The 883 just doesn’t have enough go. I had a 1200 for a while, and it was nice once i put forward pegs and a windshield on it.
A buddy bought one of those CH450s early 70’s. DOHC and all seeded so exotic, but the performance was rather bland.
Friend of mine (when he was younger) did a 16 hour run from Louisville to Savannah on a Honda Nighthawk. He refuses to do any long rides now. Of course he’s old now so that could figure in. LOL
I’m looking for someone who wants to ride from the greater Louisville area to ride the Red River Gorge east of Lexington for an over nighter next spring. No one in my age bracket wants to do it.
They were tough kickers I’ve heard.
My 1969 Lightning was my first and it was a true love/hate relationship. It was like losing one’s virginity to a beautiful girl with the clap - and going back for more. LOL
I would love to take one out for a ride now. It was sad the way the British pissed away their dominance of the motorcycle industry.
I rode a 2007 Iron that was for sale a couple of years ago. Damn thing vibrated awfully. I went home, got on my Suzuki 650 thumper and it was way smoother. I had made a couple alterations an it would outrun an 883 (up to about 65) so I figured why switch. It was bullet proof, didn’t leak oil, and vibrated less.
I can’t imagine what’s wrong with Bimota.....hell of a late 70s early 80s cafe bikes
Or the YZFR-1
Or Aprilia.....great Italian bike

The vast majority of Honda motorcycles and cars were vastly superior in engineering and overall quality for a number of decades; the union stranglehold on the production line kept the US at a perpetual disadvantage. These days EVERYTHING is engineered for failure within a given timeframe.
