My mom was only allowed to have cats when she was little and my Dad’s mom was a “no animals in the house” person. Dad had dogs but they were all outside. I guess once he had his own house he decided to have everything he wasn’t allowed to have as a kid. :-)

We also had the required hamsters, guinea pigs, terrapins, and all sorts of critters. Dad fed every stray that showed up. Growing up like I did it’s all just normal and the dogs are family. My husband doesn’t tolerate rodents so no hamsters, etc. LOL I don’t have cats because of the dogs and not because I don’t like them. I just like dogs more. :-) If I get too old to care for the dogs and they are dead and gone I might have cats. They are more self-sufficient.

Ha! My parents were just the opposite. They each had dogs while growing up, so I guess they decided they couldn’t be bothered any more once they started their own household and family. Among my favorite pastimes as a kid was hanging around in nature and just watching the critters go about their lives... Having a bird build its nest near the house was always super cool.
