An assistant director unwittingly handed Alec Baldwin a loaded weapon and told him it was safe to use in the moments before the actor fatally shot a cinematographer, court records released Friday show.
“Cold gun,” the assistant director announced, according to a search warrant filed in a Santa Fe court.
Instead, the gun was loaded with live rounds, and when Baldwin pulled the trigger Thursday on the set of a Western, he killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

According to the records, the gun was one of three that the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez, had set on a cart outside the wooden structure where a scene was being acted. Assistant director Dave Halls grabbed the gun from the cart and brought it inside to Baldwin, unaware that it was loaded with live rounds, a detective wrote in the search warrant application.
The film’s script supervisor, Mamie Mitchell, said she was standing next to Hutchins when she was shot.
“I ran out and called 911 and said ‘Bring everybody, send everybody, ” Mitchell told The Associated Press. “This woman is gone at the beginning of her career. She was an extraordinary, rare, very rare woman.”
Mitchell said she and other crew members were attending a private memorial service Friday night in Santa Fe.

Notice in his message to the husband that there is absolutely no apology; no remorse; only that it was a tragic accident and he is shocked and saddened. What a self absorbed moron.

Even blanks can kill. Actor Jon-Erik Hexum is the poster child for that fiasco.
That is a story that is told to get the actor/producer out of hot water.

It’s is being reported the gun was used by crew members a day or two earlier for target practice...hence the live ammo.

It seems like the gun handler took a photo with Baldwin with both of them posing in front of a big basket of guns. At least 20 or more. She’s and carrying a rifle and him a revolver, most likely the one he used to kill the cinematographer. It was on her just deleted facebook.

Who knows at this point, but if an assistant director handed it to him, and the people shot are the cinematographer and director, I’m thinking this was just before a scene or a rehearsal just before the scene. And the scene probably called for him to shoot at the camera and that’s what he did. The camera gal and the director were probably right there, making sure it looked or would look ok.

Only if you can view the entire round. A press check would not let you distinguish between a real round and a blank. But that's for pistols. A revolver, which is what would most likely have been on the set, is easier to check. Flip the cylinder open and check from the front side.

Wouldn’t a liberal like Baldwin be supportive of unions?
No excuse. You wield a gun, you check the gun. It is my understanding that protocols were put in place following Brandon Lee’s death. No live rounds on set. No pointing any guns at camera (should have been unmanned). Everyone on set is allowed to check the gun.
They ignored complaints about safety concerns. They hired local yokels. A death occurred.
Actions have consequences.
My guess is that Baldwin and/or Rust Productions will pay heftily in a civil suit and the Asst. Director (and prop master) who said it was a cold gun will face manslaughter charges.
