Many years ago, I read about a woman who had taken so many cruises with her husband, she felt at home onboard. When he died she sold her house and planned to spend the rest of her life cruising. Maybe she did.

Seemed like a great idea to me.

When I started doing cruises about 50 years or more ago, I did one out of New York, that had on board a wealthy woman who had booked that ship (Oceanic) from Fall thru winter. She did that mainly because she was a New Yorker, and had many big businesses, and the ship returned weekly to NY City.

She would get off the ship, and sign important papers, get reports on her businesses, and return and board the ship the same afternoon. Her friends and occasional business people who wanted to cut a business deal with her, would also board to be with her .

Also if a death, or a hot business deal or something else required her ashore presence, she would stay ashore, and then get onboard when the cruise ship returned to New York.

So, as they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. -Tom

In a similar vein, my wife and I at one point considered retiring to Walt Disney World.

This was when we were younger and loved our family visits to the land of the Mouse.

We went so far as to talk to a Disney representative. We were given several options which included leasing property in the Disney community of Celebration to staying at resorts on property.

As of 20 years ago, the two of us could stay at the Beach Club Resort, be on a meal plan that provided 15 (I think) meals a week and included admission to all of the parks for about $80K a year. It was actually part of our financial planning (for a short period of time) to try to make this retirement a reality.

God had other plans and we are now owners of a small business in New Mexico with all Disney aspirations far back in the rear view mirror. Considering the political abortion Disney has become, this is a good thing.

I was thinking about how predicting real time events have changed since my childhood and now.

When I was younger the 1938 Hurricane that ravaged New England; the start of WW2 and to some extent the Blizzard of 78, came without a warning. They just happened.

Today; we have so much information, and lost so much naivetés, we can see the turmoil and disasters coming.-Tom

I took an 8-day trip a month ago. That seemed like an eternity. Can’t imagine being gone nearly a year!

They will break up that 9 month around the world trip into 4 segments. Some cruisers will find that more appealing than a 9 month onboard experience.-Tom

” Basically my point is, the Cruise Lines can’t get their scheduled planning enacted within months, let alone making a plan more than two years away sound so positive.”

And of course there are other people to deal with off the ship. -Tom
