Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed in an incident involving a prop gun on the set of “Rust,” an Alec Baldwin film that was shooting in New Mexico on Thursday.

A second person was injured, and was receiving emergency care at a hospital in Santa Fe.

Hutchins’ death was confirmed by the International Cinematographers Guild, Local 600.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” said John Lindley, the president of the guild, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, in a statement. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office said it was investigating the incident, which was reported at 1:50 p.m. Mountain Time at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular filming location south of Santa Fe.

“The Santa Fe County sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot during filming of a scene on the set of the movie western ‘Rust’,” the office said in a statement. “According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged. Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”

Happened on Burke’s Law. That was a great show. Gene Barry had to figure out who switched the prop gun for a real one.

Live enough apparently.

A wad can kill at close range. No bullet required.

It happened to Jon-Eric Hexum on the set Cover Up in 1984.

He was playing with a prop gun that was loaded with blanks. He didn't realize that the discharge from the blanks was just as deadly when held inches from your head.

We learned in basic that blanks can and do kill.

Blank pistols can kill at close range as the wadding is fired out the barrel. I believe it actually happened once on camera a few years ago.

A prop gun typically has an obstruction in the barrel just in case a live load (not a blank) gets loaded. A bullet won’t make it down the barrel. But...a blank still ejects a lot of hot gas and whatever closed off the blank, so at close range they can be lethal (obviously now).

One was shot and killed. One was shot, survived, and being treated at a hospital.

What were the circumstances?

From NYpos

Alec Baldwin fatally shot a woman and injured a man when a prop gun misfired at the New Mexico movie set of the film “Rust,” authorities said.

The filming location at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Sante Fe was initially sent into lockdown and production was halted following 1:50 p.m. double shooting.

“There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks,” the production spokesperson told Deadline.

What are the details? I guess they will investigate. A prop gun should just be a prop gun and never kept anywhere near or even capable of using live rounds. But maybe some other kind of error is the problem here.

Per the story, Alec Baldwin fired the gun. Why he was pointing it at a cinematographer, and at what range, are two good questions. How he shot a second person is a third.

And why was the prop gun pointed at the cinematographer?

No but blanks can kill. There was some show years ago about models who worked as private investigators. The star of the show put a prop pistol to his head and blew a wad into his head, killing himself.

While in the Marine Corps, a Marine failed to clear his weapon and with the blank firing adapter removed, negligently discharged the weapon into my folded poncho blowing a hole all the way through. I took his poncho before they took him to the brig.
