If I had mouthed off to my parents like that I would have been flying backwards out of my chair before I could blink.

I think that’s exactly what happened to my brother after he reached for a third pork chop.
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
Meal time at my house wasn’t the bonding experience it was for some. I was a kid in the 50’s and 60’s. It was like being in the military. Very strict parents that were the norm for the time but a little overdone at times.
We had assigned seats at the table. I sat beside Dad so I was easy to reach. We weren’t allowed to talk. It was Dad’s quiet time. No discussion about how was your day, etc. Complete silence. Mom was a stay-at-home Mom and she was afraid to talk. Thinking back on it all it was weird.
To this day I won’t eat at the table. I sit on the side of my bed to eat or in the computer room in front of the computer but alone. When I was working I never ate at the table with others in the lunch room. I sat at a table alone to eat and read a book. I’m not anti-social at all but I eat alone.
Discipline is good for kids but sometimes some things go to far. You should be able to share conversation at the dinner table without kids being sassy.
We would have never DARED to talk back to Dad. Kids today get away with way too much mouth.
