These Iconic '70s Songs Will Make You Want to Break out Your Bell Bottoms(or puke)

Whether you remember them fondly or weren't even alive yet, the 1970s was an interesting decade for the music industry. Who can forget the disco queens and rhinestone cowboys? Flashy rock stars like Elton John and Freddie Mercury filled stadiums, and softer hits from The Carpenters and Tony Orlando and Dawn filled the airwaves. No matter which genre is your favorite, these popular songs will take you back to a time of hippies, fondue parties and leisure suits (and don't forget to check out our guide to unforgettable '60s moments and the hit songs of summer through the years too!).

You’ve got to be kidding. 70’s rock and R&B is some of the best music ever

I agree! Some people don’t know the difference between disco and 70’s R&B and thoughtlessly and stereotypically lump them together. There were were just some of the most beautiful R&B artists out there in the 70’s like the Stylistics, the Chilites, the Spinners, Blue Magic, Earth Wind & Fire, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Rose Royce— I could go on and on. When I spin these old tunes it brings tears to my eyes because we’ll probably never hear it’s like again.

Quite a bit of good stuff in the 70s too - it was the decade of Led Zepp, Deep Purple, The Who, and Pink Floyd as,well as KC and the Sunshine Band.

This was the problem going on my family: my sister playing The Carpenters, John Denver, the Cowsills, etc. on her record player at the same time I’m playing Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd etc. on my record player.

Not to be outdone by my parents playing Jim Reeves, George Jones, Mickey Gilley, etc.on the big stereo player.

What a time to be alive!

I consider the 70s to be the Dark Ages of music. The 80s was the Renaissance. And the 90s was the Golden Era of music.

The clothing sucked

The hairstyles sucked

The color palettes for everything sucked

The cars went from bad to worse

Much of the muscic was nighmarishly horrible

There were a lot of great rock. Frank Zappa, Almond Bros. Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, J Tull. And then the Vietnam War ended and Disco started up. It was as if there was the 1st half of the 70’s and then the 2nd half.

Darn right - love that Motown sound. Don't forget Led Zeppelin, The Who, CCR, Rolling Stones, Canned Heat, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Marshall Tucker Band, Santana, The Byrds and many more on the rock side.
For comedy, Rudy Ray Moore aka "Dolemite".
Disco was garbage along with Bread, The Carpenters, Barry Manilow, etc.

The Who’s best work was in the 60s...and I was never a fan of the others....except for “Smoke On The Water” (Made In Japan) and “High Hopes”.

Just gonna say it. You’re nuts! Your assessment of 70’s music is ridiculous.

That’s what I always figured.

Guess which band is still around?

We’re going to see Leonid and Friends, an incredible cover band on Friday.

Newsflash: they don’t play Dire Straights.
