"Wasn't it Kaczynski's sister and law who recognized his writings in the Washington Post? - Meaning he didn't identify anyone; Kaczynski's family did."

It was Kaczynski's own brother that recognized Ted's writing in the published manifesto. For as much as the FBI gets wrong, this is one case they actually did a fairly decent job. Their profile for the Unabomber was quite accurate, and it was the FBI that pushed the media to publish the manifesto precisely because they believed somebody would recognize the writing and turn him in.

As I recall, the FBI profile was quite inaccurate. For example, it predicted that the Unabomber had only a high school education, yet the actual guy had more than that (even taught math for a while iirc) and it was fairly obvious that the profile was wrong imho.

i’m not sure the media needed any pushing given the notoriety and the demand in the media for generating a circus of sorts. look at now, the demand is for more petito case info, not less, and the authorities are holding stuff back for whatever reason. maybe there is a book out that claims the fbi are heroes for the unabomber case but i think their participation may have thrown people onto a wrong track.
