“...how long it would take for that megatsunami to reach the east coast.”

They figure 7 to 9 hours. It’s the worst-case wave size estimates that are all over the place, from around 3 feet to 100 feet. I wouldn’t want to be there if a wave is coming, but if I were living there, I’d have a few items packed and hit the road within 10 minutes of the landslide (assuming that I knew of the landslide when it happened). Then I’d head west to Naples, and only then turn north. Even at 100 feet, the wave will run out of gas pretty quickly in Florida, so I’d expect the west side to be safe(r).

There are eruptions worse than this going on in Hawaii all the time and it’s still here. We’re more worried about ash in the air messing with air traffic than anything else.

We’re 75’ above sea level in Pinellas county. We’re in a no flood, non-evacuation zone. Just 300’ south we’ve got the highest point in Pinellas. You’re welcome to drop by in an emergency. ;-)

¿Qué ha destruido el volcán de La Palma desde el día de su erupción? Casas por valor de 150 millones, dos colegios y kilómetros de carreteras

Holy Kilauea, Batman. Per the above link, half the houses on La Palma are uninsured.

Thanks, but I’m in Texas. From doing some plots, the Texas coast doesn’t even have a line of sight to the volcano, as that is blocked by Florida, Bahamas, and Cuber. You have to get pretty far south of the US border to have that line of sight, so I think most of the Gulf Coast will be ok.

But not Florida, and especially not the islands that face the volcano. It will not be good for the ones without high ground.

True. Most there will still likely survive, but not have any place decent to live in. Yuck.

Millions...but that’s why prepared people need to be ready to bug out quickly. Few people will process the events immediately unless they’ve been thinking about it. They’ll naturally going into hurricane-thinking mode and wonder why the rush.

That’s the only chance to scram and that will start to close very quickly.

I do think that once the volcano putters out, then the risk of the landslide becomes much less...so keeping the gas tanks full and bags packs doesn’t have to be a permanent state.
