Merck says oral Covid treatment reduces risk of hospitalization, death by half for some patients

PUBLISHED FRI, OCT 1 20216:01 AM EDTUPDATED 19 MIN AGO

FTA
A phase 3 trial of Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics’ oral antiviral treatment molnupiravir showed it reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by around 50% in Covid patients.

Merck plans to seek emergency use authorization in the U.S. and submit marketing applications to other global drug regulators.

If authorized by regulatory bodies, molnupiravir could be the first oral antiviral medicine for Covid.

Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics said Friday they’ve developed a drug that reduces the risk of hospitalization or death by around 50% for patients with mild or moderate cases of Covid.

The companies plan to seek emergency authorization for the antiviral Covid treatment after the medicine showed “compelling results” in clinical trials.

The drug, molnupiravir, is administered orally and works by inhibiting the replication of the coronavirus inside the body.

An interim analysis of a phase 3 study found that 7.3% of patients treated with molnupiravir were hospitalized within 29 days. Of the patients who received a placebo, 14.1% were hospitalized or died by day 29. No deaths were reported in patients who were given molnupiravir within the 29-day period, while eight deaths were reported in placebo-treated patients.

All 775 trial participants had laboratory-confirmed symptomatic Covid-19 and were randomly given molnupiravir or a placebo within five days of symptoms.

Every participant was unvaccinated and had at least one underlying factor that put them at greater risk of developing a more severe case of the virus. The most common risk factors included obesity, being over age 60 and having diabetes or heart disease.

The phase 3 part of the trial was conducted at more than 170 sites, in countries including the U.S., Brazil, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Taiwan and Guatemala.

Molnupiravir’s efficacy was not affected by the timing of symptom onset or patients’ underlying risk factors, the study showed. It also proved to be consistently effective in treating all variants of Covid, including the widely dominant and highly transmissible delta strain.

Adverse events were comparable in the molnupiravir and placebo groups, with around 10% reporting adverse events. Just 1.3% of the molnupiravir group discontinued therapy due to an adverse event — less than the 3.4% of the placebo group who did so.

Recruitment into the study is being stopped early due to the positive results, at the recommendation of an independent Data Monitoring Committee and in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Merck is also testing molnupiravir in a separate global phase 3 study to evaluate its efficacy in preventing the spread of Covid within households.

‘Profound impact’
Robert M. Davis, CEO and president of Merck, said in a press release Friday that the company would do everything it can to bring molnupiravir to patients as quickly as possible.

“With these compelling results, we are optimistic that molnupiravir can become an important medicine as part of the global efforts to fight the pandemic,” he said.

Ridgeback Biotherapeutics CEO Wendy Holman added: “With the virus continuing to circulate widely, and because therapeutic options currently available are infused or require access to a healthcare facility, antiviral treatments that can be taken at home to keep people with Covid-19 out of the hospital are critically needed.”

“We are very encouraged by the results from the interim analysis and hope molnupiravir, if authorized for use, can make a profound impact in controlling the pandemic,” she said.

Emergency use authorization
Merck said Friday it plans to seek emergency use authorization for the drug in the U.S. as soon as possible. The company also plans to submit marketing applications to other international drug regulators.

If authorized by regulatory bodies, molnupiravir could be the first oral antiviral medicine for Covid. Antiviral treatments now in use, such as remdesivir, are administered intravenously.

Merck has already begun producing molnupiravir. The pharmaceutical giant expects to produce 10 million courses of treatment by the end of 2021, and more doses in 2022.

The company agreed earlier this year to supply the U.S. with around 1.7 million courses of molnupiravir if it receives emergency use authorization or full approval from the FDA.

Merck has also entered supply and purchase agreements for the drug with other governments — pending regulatory authorization — and is in discussions with other governments about the supply of molnupiravir.

The company said it plans to implement a tiered pricing approach based on World Bank country income criteria to ensure molnupiravir can be accessed globally. Merck previously announced that it had entered into nonexclusive voluntary licensing agreements for molnupiravir with generic manufacturers, a move intended to assist low and middle-income countries in gaining access to the treatment. Those agreements are also pending approvals or emergency authorization by local regulators.

Profit share
Ridgeback received an upfront payment from Merck as part of the companies’ development of molnupiravir. The company is also eligible to receive contingent payments depending on developmental and regulatory approval milestones.

Profits arising from the collaboration will be split between Merck and Ridgeback equally.

Thanks for posting. Good for them & hopefully we will get some relief. I don’t know why it took so long & had to get to this point. The mandates are already in place & thousands of people have been forced to take a vax they don’t want, or lose their job.

This is a good article.....

Reconciliation Will Happen, Just Not Now
Townhall.com ^ | October 1, 2021 | Erick Erickson

Pity progressives. In 2018, a progressive wave swept into Congress led by the so-called Squad. They have never known what it is like to be in the minority. They are surrounded by a young, left-leaning press and celebrity bubble that tells them they are not only right, but in the majority. They now have sympathetic Democrats in charge of the House, the Senate and the presidency. They decided to go for broke.

The result? The For the People Act died in the Senate. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act died in the Senate. Amnesty died in the Senate. Corporate tax increases died in the Senate. The Equality Act died in the Senate. Filibuster reform died in the Senate. The Green New Deal died in the Senate. Reconciliation died in the Senate. Now the progressives will kill the bipartisan infrastructure plan, which included some of what they wanted, because it is not enough. They will take no wins unless they can have all the wins. Zealots always prefer to live in hell if they can’t get Heaven exactly as they want it.

Progressives demanded reconciliation be their vehicle to fundamentally transform America. While the nation excoriated Republicans in 2018, in 2020, the GOP bounced back. Contrary to even polling, Republicans did well in 2020 except for the presidency and their own willingness to lose the Senate. Democrats expected a blue wave to expand their House majority. Instead, they nearly lost their majority and now have a single-digit majority with a 50-50 Senate. They have no mandate, but progressives know it is now or never to fundamentally transform America.

Consequently, the House and Senate have pursued a reckless spending package in the form of reconciliation. Under the rules of the Senate, reconciliation cannot add to the deficit and cannot fundamentally change public policy. As a result, Democrats must raise taxes to pay for each of their wishes and those wishes must only expand current public policy, not create new policy.

The result is an assorted grab bag of $3.5 trillion in spending that Democrats claim will cost nothing because the federal government will not be out the money — only taxpayers. Smokers of tobacco, who are disproportionately poor and middle class, will see their taxes go up almost $100 billion combined. The rich will be penalized for success, but rich people in blue states will get a massive tax cut by being able to deduct all their state taxes on their federal taxes. The middle class will see increased prices as corporations pass on tax increases by raising the costs of their products.

In exchange, progressives would redistribute wealth even to people making upwards of a quarter million dollars a year. They would expand social welfare programs to the extent most Americans would be paid a universal basic income (without calling it that.) The left would drive up prices on agricultural products in the name of fighting climate change. They would drive up fuel costs, which would impact the poor and middle class disproportionately. But they overshot.

Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona are two Senate Democrats who are not on board with the progressive conquest of America. They structured a bipartisan infrastructure plan that gives progressives some of what they want; however, they have blocked the reconciliation package that would give progressives the rest of what they want.

Manchin is opposed to the total $5 trillion spending binge. Sinema is opposed to the massive tax increases. Progressives believe their $3.5 trillion reconciliation package is a compromise because they compromised with themselves to reduce reconciliation from $5 trillion already. But even with the $3.5 trillion package, the bipartisan infrastructure plan is $1.5 trillion, and Congress has already spent several trillion dollars on COVID-19 relief.

HAHAHAHA

Good Morning Gran, that gave me a good laugh this morning.

Maybe I am not sleeping well because I am not laughing enough.

Need to go to a good comedy show here in Vegas. All the shows starting to open up now.

The only thing is, the whole nation is in Vegas it seems.

Well, not a lot of those Canadians, I guess they open their borders on the 21st.

You know what they say here about Canadians that come here.

They come here with a $5.00 bill and the shirt on their back and they don’t change either one.

LOL, sorry Judy.

Well, well, well, it’s not just Trump supporters who are pushing back against the vax mandate.

Teachers across the nation are questioning the mandate as teachers especially those who have had the virus are refusing to get vaxed and are facing getting fired.

“New York teachers ask Supreme Court to block vaccination mandate

A group of teachers is challenging the city order, saying thousands of public school employees will be forced out of work if it remains in effect.”

By Pete Williams

A group of New York City teachers asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to block an order requiring them to have at least one Covid vaccine dose before they return to classrooms next week.

Thousands of public school employees will be forced out of work if the municipal rule remains in effect, they said in an emergency appeal directed to Sonia Sotomayor, the justice assigned to handle such cases from that region.

The city order would violate a teacher’s fundamental right to pursue an occupation, their attorneys told the court, and teachers who failed to get vaccinated would never be able to return to work.

The order is unfair, they said, because it does not apply to other city employees who routinely deal with the public, including firefighters and police officers. Teachers, by contrast, “maintain close indoor contact with children, who are dramatically less susceptible to illness from Covid.”

Other municipal workers are allowed to keep working if they submit to weekly Covid testing in lieu of getting vaccinated, they said.

Lower federal courts declined to block the vaccination mandate for teachers.

Good news. This has to end. People on both sides are opposed to mandates. Never before has this happened & it should never happen again.

What is next a BMI mandate? A physical exercise mandate? A sugar intake mandate? A gun confiscation mandate?

Remember DeBlassio tried to restrict large soft drinks & was thinking about a salt restriction & even the Libtards in blue NY thought he was crazy.

A good morning to you, sweetie!

Well, you know what they say about LAUGHTER, IT IS THE BEST MEDICINE!

You should watch old Carol Burnette Shows or Andy Griffin Shows.

I think most of todays comics have become so politically correct they aren’t even funny anymore.

Jay Leno just said he is having to change and he is not happy about it.

If I can stay up I like watching Gutfeld, always makes me laugh.

Great! Does that mean our border is open to Canada and they can come here?
