Vanilla, like chocolate and avocados, is native to what is today Mexico.

Most of us have rarely tasted real vanilla - the artificial stuff is close to the natural stuff for most noses. I suppose these guys think that someone will pay $$$ for the real stuff.
Same with Wasabi we eat at Japanese restaurants - we get mostly horseradish with food coloring. The real stuff is really good but super $$$.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, it’s miraculous what the Israelis have coaxed from that wretched little scrap of land. I suspect it excites their neighbors’ envy.

Temps are probably right. But with this crop you have to create Wet or Dry seasons even if artificially. And they only bloom one day in a year. And they have to be pollinated within a 12 hour window on that one day a year.

I was working up a mulled cider recipe last winter and was shocked when I went to by some vanilla beans. It was something like 16 dollars for two beans.

When I lived in El Paso people were always going over to Juarez to buy large bottles of Mexican vanilla..
Sellers would sprinkle some in front of their shops every morning so the wonderful smell would attract tourists...
sandalwood, musk, vanilla, coffee, tobacco ... just wonderful aromas.

It’s $40.00 a pint around here. Been as high as $64.00. Used to be about $20.00 a pint for vanilla extract.

Considering what the price of real vanilla has done lately, I’m surprised someone has not run with this kind of idea before.
We certainly have the technology to produce the perfect conditions for top rate vanilla.
