That was a hilarious episode!

Here you go. I misremembered the background. The established greenhouses -- 3,000 of them! -- were bought from the Israeli settlers by American Jews who then transferred ownership of them to the Palestinian Authority. They were immediately looted. Here's more from
NBC News.

That’s weird. How much value is there in specialized gardening equipment? Was it more vandalism than theft?

I agree with you: Their neighbors hate them, for all things....

I was working up a mulled cider recipe last winter and was shocked when I went to by some vanilla beans. It was something like 16 dollars for two beans.

When I lived in El Paso people were always going over to Juarez to buy large bottles of Mexican vanilla..
Sellers would sprinkle some in front of their shops every morning so the wonderful smell would attract tourists...
sandalwood, musk, vanilla, coffee, tobacco ... just wonderful aromas.

Problem is they need a “Rainy season” and a dry season. The leaves have to stay soaked and he air must be extremely humid during the Rainy season. That is why they grow them where they do have natural tropical conditions.

It has shale, and there is a modest deposit of oil in Samaria.

It’s $40.00 a pint around here. Been as high as $64.00. Used to be about $20.00 a pint for vanilla extract.

Well, I don’t think the place he (Moses) was fleeing from had oil either. Do you mean Egypt? They produce about 700,000 barrels of oil a day. They are in the top 30 oil producing countries in the world.

Considering what the price of real vanilla has done lately, I’m surprised someone has not run with this kind of idea before.
We certainly have the technology to produce the perfect conditions for top rate vanilla.

Oh, It has. There have been. Most notably in 1841, when Edmond Albius figured out how to pollinate it by hand.
They are always trying to find more effective way to grow vanilla and saffron.
95% percent of vanilla today is not from the vanilla plant. I wonder if people would even like the taste anymore.
