Florida reported more than 75,000 cases of COVID-19 over the week, continuing a drop from summer highs when the state battled a fierce surge in infections fueled by the delta variant, according to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The figures released Friday brought the state's daily average for the week to more than 10,800 cases, though there were 11,275 new cases reported on Friday. A month ago, Florida was averaging more than 21,000 cases a day. The daily average for the past week was the lowest since the end of July.
Despite the decline in new cases, Florida marked a somber milestone in the past week, surpassing 50,000 coronavirus deaths since the pandemic began. As of last Thursday, Florida had 51,240 COVID-19-related deaths.
Epidemiologists say the state’s rates of vaccination has outpaced the national average, but it has not been enough to keep the highly contagious variant at bay because of its outsized population of elderly people and low vaccination rates among younger groups they interact with.

Meanwhile, one of central Florida's largest hospital systems transitioned back to normal operations after several weeks of restrictions on elective surgeries and other efforts to conserve resources because of the surge of COVID-19 hospitalizations. AdventHealth's Central Florida Division said the number of COVID-19 patients at its hospitals now stands at 850 people, several hundred patients fewer than earlier this summer.

Any second now.
The U.S. is also dropping in daily cases after a peak of 196,684. As of September 17th, we were at 158,156 cases.
Case count last year before the winter explosion got pretty low. With this current surge the launch level for this upcoming winter will be much higher
Almost as if people got it, now have natural immunity, and are moving on with their lives. And yeah, I’m just waiting on glowing report from the presstitutes.
My son and SIL work under Deming. Prayers needed.
Ok. I really wish we could have stats on poliitical deaths. I’m sick of hearing it’s all republicans dying. My neighbor was a democrat and died of covid. She was black and refused the vaccine due to past vaccine tests on african americans. Many Florida deaths were also in the southern part of the state….. democratic areas. But we continually hear it’s republicans who are dying. Is there anyway to know for sure?
The south was slammed this summer. I think the north will be this winter.
I now live in Florida moved from NJ in April.
I have gone out to eat 3 times in the past week.
Several trips to Home Depot, a hardware store, CVS, Wallgreens and visited a patio furniture store. We also picked up some flooring at a flooring place.
Every place is busy.
Didn’t wear a mask once. No one here in Florida seems to be all that worked up about it.
Contrast that to my visit to NJ several weeks back. Stupid masks everywhere, lots of pearl clutching when you walked near someone.
Damn I’m glad I moved!
Florida’s public health apparatus is doing its damndest to help Deep State get rid of DeSantis.
They goosed the case count.
Bet they also goosed the death toll because who’s gonna be skeered of a scamdemic that doesn’t have people dropping like flies.
States aren’t the only things in need of an audit.
DeSantis, investigate your CoupFlu stats. All of them.
I don’t believe any of these numbers ... inaccurate tests, flus and colds reported as covid, rat government statisticians, etc.
I'm sure all the folks who had their surgeries cancelled were a little worked up about it...but hey, who's counting.
Wait until the holiday L variant which will surely kill everyone.
Yes, that's what would happen in a sane world. However, I note that in the last week or two the narrative is now the claim that "latest studies show that the vaccine gives you better, long lasting immunity". When asked for references to these studies, however, they disappear.
Some turnaround. Didn’t it say 75,000 cases in the past week?
The vaccine is better than nothing at all, but if you have had the illness, you are protected longer it seems. (Both together give the most protection.)
The drawback is that you have to have the illness first for that to come into play, and you are taking a much greater risk with that.
Our hospitals are not filled with previously healthy young people with the chicom flu. This bug is mostly hitting the same hospital frequent flyers that catch everything due to their lifestyle and/or genetic bad luck.
I agree that the south was slammed. Not because I trust the numbers necessarily, but because all of 2020 and half of 2021, I knew very few that had covid, and I knew only one person personally who was hospitalized (on a vent, but recovered)
This last wave, I know 4 people who died, a couple who got pretty sick but weren’t hospitalized and dozens with mild symptoms.
Of those that died, 3 had the shot. One is unknown. All in their 50s-60s, all did have risk factors. Of the people I know for sure who didn’t get the shot - the worst was 2 weeks of flu symptoms. The majority said it was like a bad cold with headache.
That’s my firsthand experience here in GA. YMMV.
Turns out that enough folks actually get Covid and survive cases drop rapidly.
