I have to disagree with that chart.
I’ve never met a good Cortland apple that was sweeter than a Mac or Empire.
Paula Red, a very early apple, like end of August, is very sweet also. I like to make apple crisp with them because they are so sweet, you can really cut back on the sugar.
Ida Red’s are almost as sweet, but they are the last apples to come in and don’t get their best flavor until after the frost and they have been in storage for a few months. They are best coming out of storage during the winter.
We had friends from church who owned an apple orchard and gave us the advice on the Ida Reds. They were snowbirds and always took down a load of their apples for friends down there after they went for the winter, after Christmas.
Spiced rum is a retail product found on liquor store shelves.
You can buy a miniature bottle for a couple bucks......to make the recipe authentic.

We are not due for a frost for a while, apparently, looking at the forecast, but the garden absolutely needs to be cleared out and prepped for next year.
I have a bunch of veggie plants that have essentially stopped producing. What’s the best way of dealing with the plant carcasses?
I understand mulching them it’s always a good idea because of the risk of spreading bugs and disease. How best to get rid of spend tomato and pepper plants?

If you can burn them, I would. If you can’t, I’d put then in the trash.
I have a spot near our back tree line where I toss all of my spent plants for the season; it is separate from my compost piles. I know that’s not practical for everyone.

Well, they were ONCE useful, but now have been used up. :)
