It might very well be that she exasperated him to the last limit of human endurance, at which point he assaulted her, either killing her outright, or injuring her to the point where he felt he had to finish her off to prevent going to prison.

I'm writing a novel now with just such a premise; the wife berates her poor husband until it graduates to violence, and even that doesn't move him until she starts belittling his manhood. At that point:

There was nothing for it now. The whisky bottle, by the merest chance, stood right at hand. With a single rapid move he seized it by the neck and brought it crashing down upon the frenzied woman’s head.
