I’ve always thought it was peculiar that there’s no historical record of any dinosaur fossils pre Darwin’s theory of evolution.

There were lots but the bones were put down to dragons and pre-flood animals. The ancient Greeks found lots of them, but again they were mythological creatures and dragons. The bones were used for ‘medicinal’ purposes. China also. AIR

If you have Carnotaurus arms, you don’t pick up the check. It’s what you do.

Now we’re getting down to the nitty gritty of life as a dinosaur.

If you have a Carnotaurus jaw to go with your Carnotaurus forelimbs, you bite anyone who tries to stick you with the check.

There are certainly older references that sound like descriptions of dinosaur fossils, and certainly of later mammalian megafauna, but I think that 1600s is the oldest we can pin down specifically. In that case, though the bone is now gone, there was a drawing made at the time with sufficient detail to positively identify it as from a dinosaur, and even make a good guess at species.

I was referencing specific fossilized tracks in CT, but yes, there may be others.
