On 9/11 I watched the second plane fly into the WTC from a building in NJ. It was a VERY bad day, watching the towers come down knowing there wasn't a damn thing I could do to help.
Holes in the Air
By LonePalm
It was a morning like any other
The day started out most fair
Four planes full of friends fell out of the sky
Now we’re living with holes in the air.
T’was just before nine, Eastern Daylight Time
I sat in my office chair.
“Come quick,” someone said, “The tower’s on fire.”
Now we’re living with holes in the air.
Helpless we stood and unknowing we watched
Smoke rising into the air.
“Just what happened?” “I heard it was a plane.”
Now we’re living with holes in the air.
The second plane hit, a fresh burst of fire
And all we could do was stare
“Can we help?” “It’s too far.” “What can we do?”
Now we’re living with holes in the air.
Then came the word, the Pentagon’s been hit.
It’s really too much to bear.
We’re under attack, no way to strike back.
Now we’re living with holes in the air.
Heroes rushed in as workers rushed out
Save lives, was their only care.
They just went to work and never came home.
Now we’re living with holes in the air.
In a plane to the west, men cried “Let’s Roll!”
Free men refuse to despair.
They chose to save others, not die like sheep.
Now we’re living with holes in the air.
A great roaring sound, tower two came down.
Quickly, we offered a prayer.
Tragedy not done, down came tower one.
Now we’re living with holes in the air.
We lost Battalion Chief Mike, the brave.
Beautiful Barbara, fair
Still in our hearts, they died as they lived
Now we’re living with holes in the air.

LonePalm, le Républicain du verre cassé (The Broken Glass Republican)
Beautiful poem, Lonepalm.
A slight chill, and a tear in my eye.
Thanks lonepalm. I remember it over the years. Never forget.
Tears!
Love it. It sounds so familiar now.
This has always been “my” 9/11 song:
The Dawning of the Day
Mary Fahl
This morning early I walked on
While my darling was in a dream
The last sweet days of summer bloomed
And dressed the trees in green
Then soaring high in the gleaming sky
From far across the bay
Came a fearsome roar from a distant shore
At the dawning of the day
Then I called my men to follow me
Knowing well that the view was dim
Though tired and worn, how they fought all morn’
As time was closing in
And my heart was sad though sore with pride
For brave lads all were they
As the angels fly, how they climbed so high
On the dawning of the day
But the edge is moving nearer now
Inside the fading sun
And calling, calling out to them
My brothers, one by one
But only dust silence sounds
The ashes float away
As the twilight ends and the night descends
‘til the dawning of the day
Forgive me love, I’m going now
So very far away
When darkness falls, only think me near
And do not be afraid
And please don’t grieve when I am gone
Abide in what remains
‘til the shadows end and we meet again
On the dawning of the day
For when shadows end,
We shall meet again
On the dawning of the day
Haunting tune…
Thank you. Gave me chills and tears when I read this before.
Same reaction.
Very beautiful. Should go on the main part of FR. Should go viral. Can I post on my twitter? Should go everywhere. I hope you have written more poems.
Thank you for sharing your poem. So heartbreaking
