The Hemoglobin in the Red Blood Cells has an affinity for Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide that is stronger than is it’s attraction to ordinary O2.
This makes CO2 poisoning a very serious threat to the Human (all creatures) metabolism.
The PCO2 and PAO2 in the bloodstream represent that the 2 molecules are in competition for the free ride that the Hemoglobin provides.
