Afghanistan was a proxy war with the Soviets, who fought in an absolutely barbaric manner against the Mujahedeen, but the Reagan Doctrine let the Afghans themselves do the fighting, and their main weapon was stingers. I do not regret the fall of the Soviet Union. I believe the Taliban and other rad Muslim groups outside of Iran would have kept things local if we didn't get involved over Kuwait. Reagan also used the "support those fighting for their own freedom" approach in Nicaragua supporting the Contras against Communists on our continent.
