He would have been a multiply decorated Kamikaze pilot if he had flown for Tojo. Then gone into politics.

He had four accidents, including being shot down over Vietnam and the Forrestal incident. I'm not sure what happened in the other two incidents.

As my father (an Air Force and commercial airline pilot) used to say, "If any other pilot had so much as dented a single plane--but four of them?!-- his career would have been over." He was not a fan of the Maverick.
