...up to 40,000 Americans remain trapped inside the country.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That number seems ridiculously high to me.
[Forwarded from Seth Keshel]
I would like to share with you the guts of our young veterans. This is the writing of one of my best friends who has left a piece of himself in Afghanistan as a Marine Captain. He too is answering the call of leading others and influencing change.
Good Morning Congressman,
My name is (redacted) and I am one of your new constituents, living in (redacted). I am a fellow military officer and a multi-tour combat veteran of both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Serving on the ground in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, I have been in direct combat with the Taliban and am well aware of their nature and character. Deploying to Afghanistan in support of OEF 11.1 and 12.2, my battalion, 2d Combat Engineer Battalion, suffered multiple KIAs and countless life altering wounds in defense of this country, our allies, and the country of Afghanistan and its people. I pray these sacrifices were not made in vain.
I write today to support your recent statements about the mishandling of the withdrawal in Afghanistan. While it is my belief that we should not fight never ending wars, I do believe we have the God given responsibility as the United States of America, with all of our blessings and power, to support our allies and fight terrorism and extremist ideologies that suppress basic human rights. I believe this was something we were able to do in the twenty years we were there. Although, I do not disagree with the decision to pull the majority of combat troops from the country, I do disagree with the poor planning and execution that has led to the debacle that now faces us. From reading open source intelligence and through my own experience, I can not fathom how our leadership at the presidential and national security council levels could arrive at the conclusions they did about our withdrawal. I do not understand why troops were pulled out before civilians during a situation that most saw as rapidly deteriorating or had the ability to rapidly deteriorate. I also do not understand why a small contingency of troops and support personnel were not left to conduct counter-terrorism operations and/or to support the Afghan military with air support and maintenance. Due to poor planning and the poor optics of the situation, I believe President Biden has significantly weakened our standing in the world and with our allies. We now operate in a dire situation from a position of weakness. As an American, this is unacceptable. As my representative, I expect you to continue pursuing the administration and its leadership for the disaster it has created in Afghanistan.
Going forward, I expect you to pursue answers for the mis-management of the situation and to assist in our re-establishment on the world stage and our re-commitment to our allies who now may feel weak and vulnerable to Islamic terrorism or the threats of Russia, China, and Iran. Additionally, I call on you to press the administration on the accountability of weapons and munitions that may be used against us or sold to our adversaries. I would also like you to call for the pursuit and destruction of these assets through our overwhelming airpower in order to prevent their use for nefarious purposes. Lastly, I expect you to pursue through the channels available to you a solution to the current debacle by getting our fellow American citizens and Afghan partners out of the country safely and without further bloodshed. I also call on you to support women’s rights and the rights of other innocent within the country from the tyranny of the Taliban. I appreciate your work so far on this matter and I look forward to you fulfilling commitments to our citizens and partners.
Respectfully,
(redacted)
In the interview with Greg Kelly on Newsmax, President Trump mentioned he’d heard 40,000 Americans, but used the 10,000 number as he was talking about it.
