US has just two weeks to rescue 30,000 people from Afghanistan before Biden’s date for withdrawal of forces on August 31

It comes as Taliban closes in on the Afghan capital with shots heard on outskirts before fighters stormed city

On Sunday, reports surfaced that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is set to hand over power to Taliban in weeks

Around 5,000 US troops are now helping with evacuations, while British troops also deployed

The Pentagon estimates it needs to withdraw about 30,000 US staff and Afghan translators and allies

It is believed around 500 British staff needed to be evacuated and by Saturday the number was in ‘the tens’
