Hay fever and hysteria is such a great description!
Remind her of the not being able to smell, maybe she’ll calm down.
One of my son’s friends was soooo freaked over Covid, he started bleaching everything. (like straight bleach) And he killed his nostril hairs. Then he called everyone he knew, he was dyin’ of Covid because he couldn’t smell. My son asked him if maybe the bleach was to blame?
It’s kind of funny (the bleach story) but also sad that people are so panicky over this.
Where again did the flu go last year??

Yeah, well, about the smell thing:
In my humble experience anyway, losing one’s sense of smell and taste is not that unusual. My own has been diminished greatly plenty of times with colds and allergies, although I weirdly often get extra hungry when I have a cold and crave certain things despite not being able to smell or taste them so well.
About a week ago, my aunt and were out at Perkins and I had an apple cinnamon muffin with my Build Your Own Breakfast thing. She remarked about how good it smelled.
Now, mind you, it was right in front of me this muffin and not really near her.
I could not smell it at all because I was so stuffed up from allergies.
So I don’t buy that this Covid thing has any special effect on smell and taste.
Now, I think in general my sense of taste and smell might be below average, probably due to years of allergy damage, but when my allergies are not acting bad I can appreciate nice tastes and smells and be put off by bad ones.
