That’s China, Tianemen Square. ‘Tank man’ is in front of the lowest left tank in the image. It’s hard to find ‘tank man’ images as they are being methodically purged.

My memory is a little hazy at this point but it seemed as if the press was no longer interested in the story. Like they were embarrassed. "Oops! All those kids crushed by tanks. Can't let those images get out."
No more coverage that I can recall...well, except for that lone figure standing up to a column of tanks...which was used to sell those "Year in Pictures" special issues.

I was on my way to the Beijing Language Institute as a newly commissioned Ensign and addition follow on time at the Embassy prior to Surface Warfare School.
I was stopped by the Naval Attache Asst in Hong Kong and given my new orders... Go no further, catch the other 5 Ensigns on their arrivals, and stay out of trouble we have enough issues to deal with.
Over the next month..I attempted to use my minor Mandarin in a Cantonese Hong Kong, but saw the local protests, bought books with smuggled pictures of the horrible atrocities (still have), sang some really bad karaoke, and otherwise stayed low before returning to the states early.
My books have a number of Tankman photos...may he be remembered for his simple show of defiance.
